1st Annual Rhythms
of the Land Concert Series

On Sunday,
June 24th,2007 the 1st Annual
"Rhythms of the Land" Concert Series was held at
Twelve Stone Farms in Talking Rock, Georgia. Music
was provided by TOY TV and legendary bluesman Bill
Sheffield.

2nd Annual Spring Celebration

Mariellen and Roger Shultz hosted the 2nd
Annual Spring Celebration at their home on Hickory
Cove Road. Over 120 people dined on a wonderful
barbecue meal catered by Low Country Barbecue.

February 9th,2007 the 1st Annual St.
Valentine's Conservation Ball was held at the
Pickens County Chamber of Commerce
This event was co-sponsored by Crescent Bank, the
Pickens County Progress, and Main Street Fitness. Music
was provided by the Andy David Quartet.

Creation of the Outdoor
Classroom at Pickens County High School
21 September 2006
| On the 21st
of September, the Mountain Stewards continued
construction on the American Disabilities Act (ADA)
compliant accessway from the bottom of the access
trail to the outdoor classroom |

| On the 2nd of April, Mr.
John Tatum's students began to seat the foundation posts for the tiered
seating of the outdoor classroom. |
 |
| On the 19th of
January, Pickens County High School representatives Lisa Duckett (Science), Gary Peters (Asst. Principal), John Tatum (Construction), Tom Tatum (Construction), Milton Turner (Science), and Ann Wall (Physical Education) look over the prospective location of an outdoor classroom with MCTGA Executive Director Robert Keller. Construction of the tiered seating areas will begin

9th Annual Membership
Meeting & Barbecue

Cody Laird hosted the 9th
Annual Membership Meeting and Barbecue at his home
in Tate Mountain Estates. Over 200 MCTGA members and
guests gathered on the lawn to listen to Georgia
Land Conservation Program manager Curt Soper discuss
Governor Perdue's new conservation plan. We hiked,
we were treated to a meal of organically raised
meats, we witnessed artisans demonstrating
traditional Appalachian crafts and skills, and we
recycled all of trash including the plates, cups and
cutlery. |
Conservation Speakeasy

We held our 1st Conservation Speakeasy at
the Fireside Cafe & Pub in the Foothills Shopping
center adjacent to Big Canoe. Our featured speaker,
Big Canoe Home Owners Association Mapping
Coordinator Lou Sillay, explained how MCTGA would
assist Big Canoe in an endeavor to map the location
of hemlock trees in an effort to control the
impending attack of the woolly adelgid (Adelgis
tsugae). |

Dedication of the Burnt
Mountain Interpretive Trail

County Commissioner Robert Jones cut the ribbon at
the dedication ceremony of the Burnt Mountain
Interpretive Trail. The trail was created by one of
our partners, the Mountain Stewards. For driving

Mushroom Madness

Mycologists Stephen Alexander and Jeremy Bramblett
led 28 MCTGA members down into the Long Swamp Creek
Gorge for the first "Mushroom Madness".
Fifteen different species of fungi were identified,
including the Wood Ear (Auricularia
auricula)

Spring Celebration

Mariellen and Roger Shultz hosted the 1st
Annual Spring Celebration at their home on Hickory
Cove Road. Over 100 people enjoyed a beautiful
spring day in the North Georgia mountains where the
MCTGA Board of Directors, members and guests
welcomed new Executive Director Robert Keller to
Jasper. |
